Supporting a Friend

How to Support Someone Who Has Been Sexually Assaulted

  • The best thing you can do is believe them. Do not ask questions like “why” or “how.”

  • Remind them that they are not to blame.

  • Let your friend know that you are there for them if they need to talk and remind them that there are people who can help them.

  • Communicate empathy.

  • Keep the information confidential.

  • Be aware of your own reactions. Seek support for yourself if needed.

  • Give them the space they need, but check in periodically.
