Reflections

Ryan Zhang

Through this project, I think while learning about sexual assault, I think we should pay more attention to protecting ourselves in reality. Protecting yourself should come first. I also feel very happy to find a way for students to protect themselves. We should also do more to help those friends who have been hurt: companionship, communication, and advice. For me, this project is not only a project, but also a process of learning. We learn knowledge and help others at the same time. I hope to use this experience to help more people in my professional field (educational administration).

Creating this praxis project felt very meaningful to my personal activist passions. Being able to research different organizations and preventative measures for sexual assault to inform others felt purposeful and is something I would do again. The idea that this resource could possibly help someone makes the work worth it. In addition, I now have the information needed to have conversations about preventative measures for sexual assault. In the future, I would opt to give myself a longer work period for a praxis project such as this. I want to be able to achieve my visions, and in this case, just needed more time and more resources.

I enjoyed doing this project because this is a topic that is very important to me. By talking about these types of issues, we can work to then break the social stigma of sexual assault and what it means for survivors. Society often avoids talking about these issues, which tends to perpeuate sexual violence, but by being open, we can work to educate people on what sexual assault is and what they can do if they have been sexually assaulted or if they know someone who has been assuaulted. I do not think I would do anything differently in the future, I just hope that this topic becomes less stigmatized and people begin to work to put an end to sexual violence.
